Time to Fish in Thurston County Lakes

Time to Fish in Thurston County Lakes

I was waiting in line at a local grocery store, and I noticed a couple of guys checking out with the following items in their carts:  fishing lures, canned beans, charcoal, and beer.  I knew where they were headed because my dad used to fill his cart with the exact same things every year for his annual fishing trip with his brothers.  I asked where they were going to be fishing and they said Alder Lake.  Alder Lake is a pretty popular spot in the area for fishing.  It borders both Thurston and Lewis counties, and is a pretty decent place to catch trout.

Not too far from me is Lake Lawrence, also a pretty good trout fishing lake.  My family goes there, and this year we've caught nice size rainbow trout from Lake Lawrence.  I got to thinking about the best places to fish in the area, and I found a good website that lists all the lakes in Thurston County and what each of them are stocked with.  It is http://www.angelfire.com/wa/nwfishing/lakesthurstoncounty.html

However, knowing what lakes are stocked with is different than knowing what's biting now.  Then, I found this site http://www.fishingworks.com/lakes/washington/thurston/.  The nice thing about this site is that fishermen post comments on how the fishing is going at each lake as well as what kind of bait seems to be working there.

One of the fishermen at the grocery store reminded me that not all lakes or streams are available to fish.  They had accidently fished on a stream the previous week and later found out that it was not even open for fishing.  Oops!  So, check with the Department of Fish and Wildlife before heading out.  You'll find on the site that June 9-10 is a FREE fishing weekend.  That means that during this weekend you can fish without a license in area lakes.  That's great news for those who just want to try their hand at catching a few for the grill.  Other restrictions are also lifted this weekend.  They include

-Vehicle Access Pass (which comes with a fishing license)

-Discover Pass

-Columbia River Salmon/Steelhead Endorsement

-Two-Pole Endorsement

However, other restrictions on fishing will apply like size limits and lure and bait limits.  Check the Fish and Wildlife website for details.
