Did you know that you need a burn permit to burn your trash or yard debris in Thurston County? Air quality and safety is of upmost importance in the county. Heavy fog, at times, traps smoke from burn piles close to the ground which, in turn, causes air pollution. During these times, voluntary or mandatory burn bans enter effect. Your permit helps the fire department keep track of burn activity in the area.
Many residence choose to separate their trash into a solid waste can, recycle can and burn can. This kind of sorting really saves space when you pay for weekly trash pickup as you only receive one recycle and one solid waste can pickup per week. If you opt to haul your own trash to the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center in Lacey, separating your trash into the three different cans saves you money. But, if you decide to add the burn can to your waste management plan, you need to check into a burn permit. Recreational fires for parties or cooking do not require a permit if they are less than four feet wide and three feet high. Permits for fires under 10 feet wide and five feet high are free and can be obtained from your local fire department. Any fires over 10 feet wide require a special permit at $100 per acre. All fires must be attended all the way to the end, and only natural vegetation may be burned. You can obtain more information at the Thurston County Solid Waste website or through your local fire station.
