A Bumper Crop in the Pacific Northwest

A Bumper Crop in the Pacific Northwest

A friend of mine’s husband came back from a business trip to Illinois with tales of corn plants burnt to the roots, extremely high temperatures and land parched from no rain.  It reminded me how lucky I am to live in a place where we plan for rain 11 months out of the year as our norm.  August is traditionally dry, and many farmers in this area still have to work in irrigation lines for the health of their trees and crops, but severe temperatures and extended drought are not something they have to worry about.  Many of my neighbors have a bumper crop of corn and tomatoes this year, and the pumpkins are ripening early.  If Western Washington could feed the world with their fields, we would be in a good position to do so this year.  I think this speaks volumes to the idea of diversity in farming.  Having farms in one central location that feeds the bulk of the population is like the old saying, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”  When one area does poorly, there is usually another that is doing quite well.

I truly feel sorrow for our neighboring states who are suffering from repeated bad weather seasons, and I know that this tragedy will reflect in prices at the large grocery chains across the country. So, it is a good thing that here in Washington State we have spent many  years building up a farmers market infrastructure whereby we can benefit from the local farmers whose bounty we are about to reap  this year.
