Clean Indoor Air As Important As Energy Efficiency

Home owners should look for more than just energy savings in their home.  Indoor air quality may be just as important.  Research from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) says Asthma is on the rise in the United States and affects nearly 16 million adults and 7 million children in the United States each year.  Radon, a naturally occurring gas that can become trapped in your home without proper ventilation, is said to be the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.

The Mayo Clinic cites dust mites from carpet and upholstery, wood smoke, indoor mold, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by paints, caulking, carpets and household products among the top causes for allergies and asthma.  We increasingly spend more time indoors than out, so the quality of air inside has a big impact on our quality of life.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests the most effective way to increase air quality is by sealing off pollutant sources such as asbestos and pressed wood and by properly venting gas and wood appliances.  I might add that properly ventilating your home is also important.  Home owners can obtain a list of harmful pollutants and the products that contain them from the EPA's website.
