When a friend of mine put her home on the market, she struggled with how to decorate to attract buyers.She had just done extensive remodeling, including new granite countertops and bamboo flooring, and she found herself not wanting to touch anything for fear of damaging the new wares.So, when the holidays rolled around, she decided not to pull out the Halloween decorations or the Christmas decorations for fear that it would discourage potential buyers.Her children spent several months walking on pins and needles with no real celebrations for their favorite holidays.Looking back, she now regrets the missed seasons.
Realtors are rather specific when it comes to tastefully decorating and furnishing your home, but there's really no reason to take all the joy out of the season for you or for your kids just because you have your home on the market.Tasteful decorations to celebrate your family's traditions are part of what makes your home warm and livable to prospective buyers.So, pull out those decorations and beautify your home without fear.Here are a few things to remember as you begin:
1.Don't overdo.Rotting corpses and cackling witches might be a bit offensive to some buyers, not to mention might scare them or their children away from your door.
2.Decorate to enhance your interior and exterior.Just like placing furniture in a way that enhances the traffic flow of a room, decorations should coordinate and enhance the style of your home.
3.Don't block traffic.You may have placed your Christmas tree in the foyer of your home for years, but if it keeps buyers from seeing the magnificent tile mosaic in the entry, you might opt for placing it in a tidy corner of your living room instead.
4.Resist clutter.Holidays can bring out the overachiever in us all.Just remember that a house full of decorations doesn’t necessarily mean a better celebration.Keep it simple, keep it modest, and keep it real.Buyers will feel the love and care you've given to your home from the tasteful decorations you've displayed to celebrate your family's traditions.
