It's fall, and that means power outages.Sorry, it's just a fact of life in the Puget Sound region.Heavy winds and driving rain that knock trees down onto lines is the biggest culprit.Vehicle accidents due to the bad weather are another.
Last week Yelm, McKenna, and Roy lost power due to an overturned semi-truck that clipped a line. Why so many people out of power for a simple overturned vehicle or tree? Some of it has to do with sheer luck.It seems the semi-truck clipped a line that serviced many different areas. However, the number of substations and transmission lines in place for an area also makes a difference. The more lines and substations, the better coverage there will be in an area and the better disbursement in case of a clipped line.Puget Sound Energy is in the process of creating new transmission lines and upgrading substations in the Yelm region. New lines will be laid at the Yelm substation and a fitting will be added to expand for an additional transmission line at a future date. The Longmire substation will connect to a second transmission line which will increase reliability to homes and businesses in that service area.Creating more than one transmission line to service the Longmire substation will help limit the effect of a power outage to customers.Seventeen miles of transmission lines will be added to the St. Clair/Yelm substation to extend coverage in that area. The Yelm project is scheduled to be completed in December 2011.The Longmire and St. Clair projects are still in preliminary stages, but they are certainly a needed addition to Yelm's fast growing community.
You can follow the progress of these important projects through Puget Sound Energy's website on the Yelm area reliability page. Also included on this page are maps which delineate the projected changes.
