Testing for a Well Maintained Well

Testing for a Well Maintained Well

Among the many maintenance projects homeowners must undertake, well water testing often gets pushed to the background.  If you own a well, you are responsible for testing your own water yearly for bacteria and every three years for nitrates.  If concentrations of these two items are high in your water, you or your family are at risk for sickness.  Thurston County offers testing for bacteria with several sample drop-off sites county wide.  The cost is $25.  Testing for nitrates is a separate fee since it is only recommended every three years unless you live in a heavy agriculture area.

However, there are other naturally occurring substances that you should be aware of that the county testing lab doesn't check for.  Items such as Iron, manganese, copper, lead and the ph levels of your water all have an effect on  your health and the maintenance of your plumbing fixtures.  An overabundance of any of these can wreak havoc on your plumbing and give you a hard time with laundry stains, tub and toilet rings and any other fixture your well water touches on a regular basis.  You can send it off to a private lab for testing of these items, but you can also utilize the free water testing offered through water filtration and softening companies.

The Water Doctor of Washington offers a free testing and free estimates on any solutions you may need to correct water problems in your home.  Utilizing these services is especially helpful if you have noticed changes in the taste or odor of your drinking water or have staining on your fixtures.  Why fight with the stains when you can head it off at the source?

City water users can get a full report of what is in their water through the Consumer Confidence Reports on their city's website.  State regulations require these reports annually (or every three years for some testing) so that residents have a full disclosure of their water's health.
