For anyone who wonders if Yelm is big enough to support an Arts culture, I have news for you. I attended a play put on by the Standing Room Only group led by Nancy Hillman at the new Triad theatre. The group lived up to their name as there were people turned away at the door for lack of sufficient space. The first play was a children's production with a cast 35 kids strong. I was impressed at the number of people who came out to support the production.
But, children's plays are not the only thing the Triad is trying to bring to the old Wolf building in downtown Yelm, which sat empty for nearly a year after the Crossroads Community Church vacated the space to open in their new location on Bald Hills Road. The non-profit organization intends to bring a full litany of art to the area including film festivals, gallery showings, educational programs, lectures and outstanding, world-class performers. That's a tall order for a small town, but if the crowd from Standing Room Only's play is any indication of the support the new organization will find, then I think they have a pretty good chance of making it a go.
The Triad is available for rental by artists and other organizations. Check out their website for more details.
